About this trip

At MEDLIFE, we're dedicated to building a global movement that empowers disadvantaged communities in their quest for equality in healthcare, education, and access to a safe home. As a volunteer in the Service Learning Trip (SLT) program in Tena, Ecuador, you'll contribute to development projects, participate in educational workshops, and provide free medical care to those in need. Additionally, you'll have the invaluable opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and understand other realities.

8-nights dorm room accommodation for 6 to 9 people, exclusively with MEDLIFE participants.

Meals

3 meals a day are provided Monday-Friday, along with breakfast provided on the weekends.

Day 1

Arrival to Quito

Arrive into Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) between 5 pm and 11 pm. A MEDLIFE representative will be waiting for you in the International Arrivals area with MEDLIFE sign. Once all volunteers have arrived, you will be shown to the bus that will transfer you to the hostel in Quito.

Transfer to Tena

After breakfast, we'll depart for Tena by bus, enjoying the scenic 5-hour journey as the mountain landscape gives way to lush jungle. Upon arrival, lunch will be served, and you'll have time to relax and settle in at the hostel, perhaps even taking a dip in the pool. In the evening, there will be an orientation meeting to discuss the week's plans and safety guidelines.

Reality Tour

Begin the Reality Tour by visiting Ahuano Community to meet a local family and delve into discussions about traditional medicine and the education system at a nearby school. Following lunch, venture to Shiripuno Community to immerse in Tena's culture. Explore a women’s co-op, witness a traditional dance, learn chocolate-making from cacao, and gain insights into Amazonian rainforest culture and attire. After returning to the hotel for relaxation, convene in the conference room at 5 pm for a presentation on MEDLIFE’s initiatives and receive Mobile Clinic station assignments for the week. Volunteers are then free for the evening.

Mobile Clinics & Development Project

Mobile Clinics are held daily in various communities, 30 minutes to 2 hours away. Volunteers unload supplies, meet health professionals, and receive brief training before clinics open between 8-9 am. Patients visit Triage, Education, and Medical Consultation Stations. Volunteers assist in pharmacy tasks and switch stations after lunch, with clinics closing between 1-3 pm. 

They may also help with community Development Projects. Evenings feature Post-Clinic Activities at 5 pm before dinner.

Inauguration Day

After working on either the Development Project or a Mobile Clinic for the first half of the day, all volunteers will then head to the development project site for an inauguration celebration with the community.

Optional Tourism Activities

Exploring Papallacta, Baños & Waterfall Route (Full day experience), Make the most of your trip by participating in an optional tourism activity or extension. In Tena, most volunteers choose a Day Trip to Papallacta relaxing hot springs.


Day 9

Onward Travel

Continue exploring Ecuador or return home. 

Depart Quito anytime from 10 pm Saturday to 12 pm.
