About this trip

At MEDLIFE, we're dedicated to building a global movement that empowers disadvantaged communities in their quest for equality in healthcare, education, and access to a safe home. As a volunteer in the Service Learning Trip (SLT) program in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, you'll contribute to development projects, participate in educational workshops, and provide free medical care to those in need. Additionally, you'll have the invaluable opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and understand other realities.

What's included

Accommodation

8-nights dorm room accommodation for 6 to 9 people, exclusively with MEDLIFE participants.

Meals

3 meals a day are provided Monday-Friday, along with breakfast provided on the weekends.

To and from the airport (within the established schedule), and to SLT activities.

Day 1

Day 1 image

Arrival to Liberia

Arrive at Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport (LIR) between 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. A MEDLIFE representative will meet you at the airport and escort you to your accommodation. You will have time to relax, settle in, and then head out to explore. Meals aren’t included today, but you can enjoy a tasty dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

Orientation Day

Your Trip Leader will take you on a walking tour of Tamarindo, giving you a chance to learn about the local way of life. The evening will be dedicated to an orientation meeting where we will distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), cover what to expect for the week, safety precautions, and a brief training course on our Mobile Clinics. Meals are not included today, but there are lots of great places to eat nearby.

Reality Tour

During a MEDLIFE Reality Tour, volunteers accompany staff to partner communities, gaining insight into their daily challenges and exposure to extreme poverty for the first time. It's a pivotal experience, aiming to foster cultural awareness and sensitivity crucial for serving communities abroad.

Mobile Clinic

Volunteers support daily Mobile Clinics in various communities near Tamarindo, each lasting from 8-9 am to 1-3 pm. Activities include triage, educational talks, and medical consultations, with volunteers assisting physicians and managing prescriptions. Evenings may feature post-clinic activities or free time to explore the city.

Development Project

Today, join locals on a community project like home renovation or well construction, departing the hostel at 7:30 am. Wear suitable clothes. After completion, celebrate with the community. We'll return around 2:30-4:00 pm for reflection and debrief with the MEDLIFE team.

Optional Tourism Activities

Exploring Tamarindo - Guanacaste (Full day experience), explore Costa Rica's natural beauty. Visit local coffee and cacao plantations to learn about their production process, then get up close to wildlife on our Sloth Bears Tour. Finally, marvel at the stunning Llanos del Cortés Waterfalls near Bagaces. Join us for an unforgettable adventure!

Onward Travel

Continue exploring Costa Rica or return home. 

Depart Tamarindo anytime between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
