About this trip

At MEDLIFE, we're dedicated to building a global movement that empowers disadvantaged communities in their quest for equality in healthcare, education, and access to a safe home. As a volunteer in the Service Learning Trip (SLT) program in Ecuador, you'll contribute to development projects, participate in educational workshops, and provide free medical care to those in need. Additionally, you'll have the invaluable opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and understand other realities.

Accommodation

8-nights dorm room accommodation for 6 to 9 people, exclusively with MEDLIFE participants.

Meals

Breakfast is included every day, while lunch and dinner are provided on fieldwork days (5 days).

Day 1

Arrival to Quito

Arrive at Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) between 5 pm and 11 pm. A MEDLIFE representative will be waiting for you in the International Arrivals area with a MEDLIFE sign. They will help you check in and answer any questions you may have about your upcoming week.

Day 2

Equatorial Line & City tour

Our journey begins at the Intiñan Museum, a unique attraction located near the equator. We will explore this interactive museum, which showcases the science of the equatorial line and the traditions of Ecuador's indigenous cultures. The visit concludes with a fun opportunity to participate in various experiments and a demonstration of the Coriolis effect.

Quilotoa - crater experience & Transfer to Riobamba

Take a scenic 4-hour bus ride to Riobamba after breakfast. Explore a remote mountain region known for indigenous communities and Tigua paintings. Marvel at Quilotoa Crater Lake inside an extinct volcano and visit Tigua's vibrant art galleries. Enjoy free time in Riobamba's main square before an evening orientation.

Reality Tour + Educational Round Table Discussion

Embark on a full-day Reality Tour to explore the region's geographical, political, and social realities. Visit historical sites like Iglesia de Balbanera and Hacienda Totorillas for insights into Ecuador's past. Explore Feria de Guamote, a traditional Andean market, and visit a local hospital and cheese factory to understand local healthcare and entrepreneurship. Engage in an Educated Roundtable Discussion to address community challenges.

Mobile Clinic #1

Wake up bright and early for your first day of volunteering on a Mobile Clinic! Staffed by local practitioners, our clinics offer basic medical treatment and preventative screenings to low-income patients.

After returning to the hotel in the afternoon, we will hold our second Engaged Education Roundtable Discussion, focusing on the relationship between poverty and healthcare.

Mobile Clinic #2

Help MEDLIFE bring free healthcare to low-income communities with another day of volunteering at a Mobile Clinic. Upon arrival, we will work together to set up each station. Volunteers will spend the morning shadowing medical professionals as they provide treatment and identify patients in need of follow-up care.

After two busy days in the field, you will have the chance to relax and enjoy a documentary movie night later today.

Day 7

Development Project

Today, you'll work with locals to build a sanitary bathroom facility, improving children's quality of life. After inaugurating the project, we'll head to Baños, a vibrant city at the foot of the Tungurahua Volcano, for a three-hour bus ride from Riobamba.

Baños & the waterfall route

Explore Baños de Agua Santa, nestled amidst the Andes and Amazon, renowned for its natural hot springs and breathtaking scenery. Embark on the Route of the Waterfalls aboard a colorful Chiva bus, offering spectacular views of volcanoes and cascading waterfalls along the way. Experience adrenaline-pumping adventures, including a ride on the Swing at the End of the World, Casa del Arbol, where adventurers of all ages can enjoy stunning mountain vistas while soaring over the cliff's edge.

Onward Travel

Depart Quito anytime from 10 pm on Saturday to 12 pm on Sunday.
